Poker

Poker has been around for a long time in the United States, although it’s original is lost in history. In 1830 it was played in New Orleans and that was the first reference to it. After that it spread via the railroad. Poker is the only card game where you play against other players and not the house. It is hugely popular both casinos and online. There are many different poker games, but the highest winning hand always exists. There are actually only two types of poker games, stud and draw. Of course within these two are many different games with their own rules.

Draw poker is defined as being able to “draw” more cards from the deck after the initial cards are dealt. Cards are dealt face down so only you know what you have and you don’t bed until after you receive you cards and again after your new cards are given to you. Stud poker games the player keeps the cards dealt to him. Some cards are face down, and just for you, and some are face up, usually shared between the table. Betting is done after each face up card is laid out and the last face down card dealt. In both kinds of poker games either five or seven cards are played. And games are either high or high/low. High games are where the player with the highest hand wins the pot. High/low means the player with the highest hand and lowest hand split the pot. These kinds of games can get very interesting because some people try to get the low hand instead of attempting the high.

Playing a draw poker game can be harder because you have no idea what your opponent has and it can make betting more difficult. But stud games can be hard as well because everyone can see several cards you might use in your hand. Especially if there are lots of “good” cards face up, it can be difficult to determine what to bet since any of those cards can be used in many ways to win the hand. The most popular poker games are Texas Hold’em, 7 card stud, Omaha, and 5 card draw. 5 Card draw is the only draw poker game of these four. And it’s interesting to know that the three stud games all use seven cards, with some face up and other for individual players only.
